Greetings all! It's a very special Friday 13th in the studio and what better day to reveal the latest monster to enter CardLife's growing ecosystem.
Introducing The Dryad
The Dryad has some serious swagger and he's been designed as the first creature with ranged attack abilities in the whole game. Now obviously we won't be adding a ranged enemy without giving players the ability to attack at range as well, so when we add the Dryad initially it will only use its melee abilities. When we add bows, arrows and crossbows that will change, but more on that in a future devblog.
Currently we have a bunch of creatures in CardLife from Wolves to Lizardmen, Raptors to Imps, but these are placed in a scattershot manner throughout the world. Ultimately our aim is to add all of these creatures into their own localised biomes; for instance, the Lizardmen and Raptor would live in the Jungle Biome and the Deer and Bear will only be found in the Forest Biome. We don't have any biomes in the game at the moment, but that's the design direction we're heading - we want each biome to have its own unique visuals, enemies and crafting components so the player feels tangible variety in the game world.
The Dryad is a low-level monster in CardLife and shares characteristics with its namesake in Greek mythology. This creature has been balanced so that you can kill it relatively early in your character's development and it'll drop magical essence which you can use to enchant your equipment. Here's a shot of the finished creature in-game:
Community Vote - Meat Cooking
Sometimes inspiration comes from… unusual places. This week the development team has become obsessed with burgers thanks to the prospect of a new Five Guys fast food place opening up just a stone's throw away from the studio. This led to the inevitable question; should we add the ability to cook meat in CardLife?
We chucked the idea back and forth internally, and then we thought, why not ask the community? We'll be doing more public votes in the future so be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter feed for more opportunities to have your say on the game's development.
July Update
Our next content update is shaping up really well. Our QA team is currently put all the content through its paces and we're happy to confirm that the new day/night cycle detailed in Devblog 81 and the Dryad will be launching in the July update. An exact date and time for the launch depends on how testing goes, but as the name suggests it will arrive this month.
That's your lot for this week's Devblog. Next week we'll talk more about the July Update and feature some of the best bits from the community.
