DevBlog 38 - Saving!

Hello and welcome to the 38th CardLife DevBlog,

Game changing patch this week along with a quick update on what we have been up to:

Patch Notes 38

Saving, saving & saving, plus a few fixes. Here are the major changes:

  • Saving Mk1 has now been enabled - this means that your inventory will now save when you log off including allowing you to continue building between sessions
  • There are few things with saving that are not yet implemented and will come with Saving Mk2 - these are:
    • Position of character in the world
    • Position of items within your inventory and on your hotbar
    • The outline of your Connect the Dots creations
    • Pickups
    • Building pieces that are deleted (these will reappear on reload but you will be able to delete them again)
  • A temporary fix has also been added that teleports you back to the surface if you fall through the world (this will be disabled when we add our new collision system)
  • A few miscellaneous building fixes

Ongoing Work: Founder's Pieces

Do not fret! Founder’s items will be coming very soon alongside some major improvements to the building system. This will include the Founder’s Banner and the Founder’s Diorama Statue. On their release all Founders will gain access to a special crafting recipe so they can build both decorations in any material they want. But until then here is a sneak preview of what they will look like in-game (these are work in progress):

Ongoing Work: AI and Combat

The AI is progressing nicely and will soon be ready for it’s very first launch - albeit in a very simple manner. We now have wolves spawning around us and if you get too close they will attack and you will have to fight them to the death. We have the core elements working but Alessio and Aldo are working on the steering and combat related features simultaneously so hopefully very soon we will have AI on the live build.

Ongoing Work: Crafting & Loading Bar

Now that Saving Mk1 has been implemented we are planning on doing some other features that we have been putting off until now - these include some really cool improvements to the crafting system (including CTD) and a total rework of the loading bar so you don’t get stuck at 0% for ages. I’ll go into more detail on these in a future DevBlog.

Ongoing Work: Collision & Caves

Our new collision system has been tested and is massively faster than the physX one. This is incredibly good news for us as on the profiler we went from the collision taking almost 60% of a single frame to 0.0% - it’s an order of magnitude faster. We are now working on adding the simple collision raycasts for digging, jumping and pickups and we will be releasing this alongside caves which are looking great.
