DevBlog 25 - Hunger Part 1

Hello and welcome to the 25th CardLife DevBlog,

Since the last DevBlog the team has been absolutely flat out as we have been developing the build and working on a gameplay video which will hopefully give people a glimpse into the future. I will be releasing this very soon on our YouTube channel.

Anyway, let’s get into what we have been up to:

Patch Notes 28

We have released a new patch that you can get automatically via the launcher. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get the Connect the Dots crafting in as we encountered a really nasty bug and we only want to release it when it’s ready. Here are the patch notes:

  • A work in progress Hunger system that affects how fast you regain stamina. If you are really hungry you won’t regain stamina at all
  • You can now eat Springberries to replenish your Hunger
  • New tree billboarding system which should mean you can see trees as far as you can see (depending on quality settings)
  • New character model which you will be able to customise in the future
  • New work in progress 3rd person animations for the player character

Hunger Part 1

As above we have released part 1 of the Hunger system which means you lose Hunger Points over time depending on what you do. Then depending on how hungry or full you are will dictate how quickly you replenish your stats i.e. Health, Stamina and Mana - although currently only Stamina is implemented. You will lose Hunger Points slowly over time but more quickly if you perform more vigorous actions such as Sprinting and Jumping. You can replenish your Hunger Points by eating food (e.g. Springberries) which you can harvest from the bushes. This is just the very first iteration of Hunger and we will be making major changes to it as we release future builds. Let us know what you think.

Ongoing Work: Connects the Dots

So we’re getting closer and closer every day to being able to release the CTD crafting system and I had hoped we could of released it today but we ran into a major bug that was breaking the line as you drew. Obviously we don’t want to release it until it’s in a good state so we made the decision to withhold it from the patch. In the meantime you can see a few examples of what we have been drawing for our player character and wolf:

Ongoing Work: Crafting Backend & Terrain

While Connect the Dots crafting will be how you actually customise your crafts, we will still have an inventory based crafting interface where you put the raw materials before you get to the CTD screen. To this end Brian has begun working on the backend functionality that implements the actual recipes and materials costs for the crafts.

Ed has also continued his lifelong quest to improve the terrain generation that will hopefully be a major improvement in the performance. As always he has made some big steps but every week we learn more and more how the system works and we are slowly bending it to our will so that everyone from low end PCs to high end PCs can enjoy CardLife at a decent framerate.

As I touched on above, I will be releasing a gameplay video in the near future and I will let everyone know when I do. Until that time if you have any feedback, questions or comments please feel free to contact us at any of our social portals: Facebook, Twitter and our very own Forums.

Cheers,
