DevBlog 76 - Take a Bow

Greetings Founders, it’s Thursday so you know what that means - time for another juicy devblog! As much as we’re enjoying seeing all the great feedback after this week’s Age 2 release, we’re also looking forward to the future. This week, we have a new in-game item which we think you’re going to like...

 

Introducing The Bow

Jess has been working on an eagerly-anticipated feature this week - here we have your very first look at CardLife’s initial ranged weapon, the Bow;


 

In terms of the visual design of the bow, the aim was to head towards low-fantasy and real world historical inspirations rather than anything high-fantasy or too elaborate. Think Game of Thrones more than an Elvish bow from Lord of the Rings. The aim is to fit the silhouette into the Age 1 aesthetic, with just a touch of flair on the arms of the bow.

 

Another consideration when starting on the design for the bow is how it’s perceived from a player’s perspective, which is chiefly first-person in CardLife - certainly with a ranged weapon. To that end, details are focused around the center of the bow, which will appear most prominently in the player’s field of vision.

 

There will of course be a range of different material versions of the bow, with wooden and stone versions available early and without the need for any specific crafting tables - though metal variants will need a forge, of course. The introduction of ranged combat is a significant one, bringing an alternative approach to enemy encounters. Guard towers anyone?

 

We'll be going into more detail about this exciting new feature over the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

So far we’ve been absolutely loving all your reactions to Age 2 of CardLife - with such a huge drop of content there’s a lot of feedback to monitor, but as I say so often, every single report or anecdote is a massive help, so thank you very much.

 

Of course, we’re not stopping there. With Age 2 out in the wild, we’ve been regrouping and getting ready for what’s next for CardLife. We’re working on some very cool new content for the game, including ranged combat, new enemies, and one feature which will be positively earth-shaking. More on that soon...
